What is serigraphy and how does it emerge?

Serigraphy is an art graphic created by printing in silk screen printing or screen printing.

Silkprint is a printing technique of the old couple of thousands of years, and it was created in China as one of the silk patterns. The technique is based on painting the paint on a wooden or rubber boulder on the substrate (textile, paper, etc.) through the silk that is tense on the wooden frame, and there is a template with the pattern we want to reproduce. Today, instead of real silk, various artificial materials are tensed on a wooden or aluminum frame, which is why the name of the press is more commonly used. However, almost in its original form is used today.

Also, with the exception of rare artists who work manually by directly painting a silk tapestry on the frame, today it uses a photographic process that maps the pattern to the film on a special photosensitive substrate applied to silk. The film can be made using a computer or printer, or it is still very often in art graphics, drawing a pattern on a transparent foil with a special red paint (as in our photograph).

This technique can only print one color in one pass. However, from all printing techniques, this technique uses the thickest layer of paint, which is why it is very grateful for art graphics because maximum saturation, intensity and tonic value of a particular color is achieved. Also, unlike other printing and graphic techniques, virtually unlimited application of color layers is possible. Just because of the thickness of the dye, every graphic sheet is put into special shelves after printing, as it takes a while to dry the dye. The entire procedure is repeated for each individual color, depending on the motif of the graphics, can be from 1.2.3 colors up to 50 and more colors. Upon completion of the print, the author chooses the graphic sheets he is satisfied with and counts and signs them.

Upon completion of the print, the author chooses the graphic sheets he is satisfied with and counts and signs them. Graphics lists are numbered with numbers eg 12/100 where there is 12 row number of graphics lists, while 100 is the total number of printed graphics. Additionally, part of the editions will be retained by the author as their own special copyright, meaning E.A. (author edition) and usually contains 10 to 20 graphics sheets.

Artwork made with silk screen technique is often underrated and considered inferior to artwork. Of course, such an attitude does not have any serious backing. The fact is that in this technique can print far more sheets of graphics than copper, where the printing is limited by the durability of the copper plate itself, which after fifty prints becomes unusable. However, it is well-known that authors such as Andy Worhola or Salvador Daly worked in this technique for a few editions in a couple of thousand pieces, which does not diminish the value and price of a particular graphic sheet.

There is a whole range of Croatian artists who, in the art of graphic arts, have likened their art and visual artwork to and made available to a wide range of visual artists, even in the form of graphic prints, otherwise being denied access to their work. Because original, individual works of art, apart from being often unavailable due to the price itself, are even more unavailable due to the fact that there is only one thing. Let's just list some of the artists who were happy to use this graphic technique, from the pioneer of serigraphy in Croatia: Knifer, Picelja, Srneca, Richter, Price, to Bućan, Murtić, Jordan, Kuliša and many others.
